Under The Sea Dessert Table for Birthdays, Baby Showers & Ocean-Themed Parties

If there’s one party theme that never seems to go out of style, it’s an Under the Sea party.

Whether you’re planning a little mermaid birthday, an ocean-inspired baby shower, or a summer celebration, there’s something magical about bringing the colors and textures of the ocean to life through dessert.

For this dessert table, I wanted everything to feel playful, colorful, and a little whimsical. Soft blues, turquoise, coral, purple, peach, and sandy neutrals created the perfect color palette for desserts inspired by everything you’d find beneath the waves.

Instead of focusing on elaborate decorations, I let the desserts become the decor. From hand-decorated sugar cookies to icon cakes, every dessert helped tell the story.

If you’re planning your own ocean-themed celebration, here are all of my favorite dessert ideas, decorating tips, and hosting inspiration.

Why You’ll Love This Dessert Table

  • Perfect for birthdays, baby showers, and summer parties
  • Beautiful mix of colors and textures
  • Easy combination of decorated desserts and simple recipes
  • Plenty of make-ahead options
  • Great for kids and adults
  • Easy to customize for your own party colors

My Formula for an Under the Sea Dessert Table

Whenever I’m planning a dessert table, I like to include a variety of desserts so there’s something for everyone.

For this table, I included:

  • Two simple celebration cakes
  • Decorated sugar cookies
  • A rich chocolate dessert
  • A chewy no-bake dessert
  • Bakery-style cookies
  • Some cut up into bite-sized treats

Mixing different heights, colors, and textures makes the table feel full without needing dozens of different desserts.

Decorated Sugar Cookies

The sugar cookies were definitely the stars of this dessert table.

I decorated them as:

Soft shades of lavender, peach, coral, teal, and pink gave everything a fun underwater feel while still looking elegant.

One of my favorite things about decorated sugar cookies is that they double as decorations before anyone even takes a bite.

Vanilla Crab Icon Cake

This simple vanilla cake became the centerpiece of the dessert table.

Instead of covering it with elaborate fondant decorations, I kept the design clean with smooth vanilla buttercream and tiny buttercream crabs piped around the cake.

Sometimes the smallest details make the biggest impact.

Confetti Celebration Cake

Every ocean party deserves a little extra color.

This confetti cake was decorated with miniature buttercream seashells around the sides in various colors, giving it a fun beach-inspired look without feeling overdone.

It paired perfectly with the brighter colors throughout the dessert table.

Fudgy Brownies

Every dessert table needs something rich and chocolatey.

My homemade brownies balanced all of the colorful desserts and gave guests a classic option alongside the decorated treats.

They’re one of those recipes I make over and over because everyone loves them.

I suggest cutting them into bite-sized pieces because they are rich!

Oreo Smash Cookies

These oversized bakery-style cookies always disappear first.

Their soft centers and crunchy cookie pieces make them the perfect addition to any dessert table.

Plus, they add a darker chocolate color that contrasts beautifully with all of the pastel desserts.

Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats

I love including at least one no-bake dessert whenever I’m hosting.

These peanut butter Rice Krispie treats are chewy, nostalgic, and easy to make ahead.

Cut them into smaller squares so guests can sample several desserts.

Sprinkle Cookies

These birthday cake-inspired sprinkle cookies brought another pop of color to the table.

They’re cheerful, buttery, and perfect for birthdays or celebrations of any kind.

A few little details go a long way.

You can try adding:

  • Pearl candies
  • Crushed graham crackers as “sand”
  • Clear glass jars filled with shells
  • Blue glass bottles
  • Fishing net accents
  • Starfish
  • Small coral pieces
  • Bubble-inspired balloons

Remember, the desserts should still be the main attraction.

Get Party Ready Before Guests Arrive

One thing I’ve learned after years of hosting is that the secret to enjoying a party isn’t making more desserts, it’s preparing ahead of time.

I use my Party Ready Checklist before every gathering to spread out the cleaning, baking, shopping, and decorating over several days instead of trying to do everything the morning of the party.

If hosting tends to leave you feeling overwhelmed, grab my free checklist below.

Frequently asked questions

A mix of cakes, decorated sugar cookies, cookies, brownies, bars, and no-bake treats creates a balanced dessert table with something for every guest.

I usually recommend five to eight different desserts, depending on the size of your party. Offering a variety of flavors and textures makes the table feel abundant without creating unnecessary work.

Soft blues, seafoam green, aqua, coral, peach, lavender, sandy beige, and white create a classic Under the Sea color palette.

Many desserts can be made several days in advance. Sugar cookies, brownies, sprinkle cookies, and Rice Krispie treats all hold up beautifully, making party day much more relaxed.

Not at all. Let your desserts become the decorations. Beautiful cakes, colorful cookies, varying heights, and a few simple coastal accents are often all you need.
