Cinco de Mayo Sugar Cookies

(fun and festive decorated sugar cookie ideas)

Cinco de Mayo always feels like one of those holidays that should be celebrated with bright colors, good food… and cute cookies.

These Cinco de Mayo sugar cookies are such a fun way to add something playful to a party table, taco bar, or dessert spread without making things too complicated.

I kept these designs simple and fun.

Little tacos. Green cactus cookies. Triangle “nacho chips” with orange icing for cheese. The kind of cookies that make people smile before they even take a bite.

And the best part is they all start with the same sugar cookie recipe I use for almost every holiday and custom set.

So once you know the basics, you can make these for just about anything.

The Sugar Cookie Recipe I Always Use

If you’ve made my sugar cookies before, you already know…

this is the one.

Soft centers, clean edges, and the perfect base for decorating with buttercream frosting instead of royal icing.

They’re easier to make, easier to decorate, and honestly taste way better.

Cinco de Mayo Cookie Design Ideas

These are simple enough to make at home and don’t need perfect piping.

Taco Sugar Cookies

These are probably my favorite.

Use a taco-shaped cutter or create one with a circle cut in half and folded visually with frosting.

I used:

Work in layers with these cookies… shell first, then lettuce, then meat and toppings.

Cactus Sugar Cookies

A cactus shape is easy and so cute.

Pipe green buttercream onto the cookie and add little white dots, a mustache or tiny pink flowers if you want extra detail.

I’ve even added some white sprinkles to look like the pokey part of the cactus!

These are cute mixed into the brighter food-themed cookies to balance the set.

Nacho Chip Sugar Cookies

These are simple and so funny.

Just triangle-shaped cookies with orange frosting on the side so it looks like they’re ready to be dipped in nacho cheese.

Easy.

Cute.

Kids and adults love these!

Color Palette Ideas

For a cohesive Cinco de Mayo set, I’d stick to:

  • green
  • orange
  • yellow
  • red
  • white

Bright but simple.

Tips for Decorating Sugar Cookies with Buttercream

Buttercream is way more forgiving than royal icing.

A few tips:

Use thicker buttercream for details
This helps shapes hold.

Pipe a base first
Then add details after.

Use simple piping tips
Round tips are enough.

Chill cookies before decorating if needed
Makes handling easier.

How to Serve Cinco de Mayo Sugar Cookies

These are so cute on:

  • taco bars
  • fiesta dessert tables
  • school parties
  • Cinco de Mayo dinners
  • themed birthdays

Layer them on trays with colorful napkins or near margaritas and chips.

Instant cute.

FAQ

Yes.

Bake the cookies 1–2 days ahead and decorate later.

Or decorate fully and store in an airtight container.

Yes.

Freeze unfrosted cookies and thaw before decorating. Or you can freeze fully decorated cookies for up to 2 weeks! These sugar cookies freeze like a dream.

Of course.

But I personally always prefer buttercream.

Holiday cookies don’t need to be complicated.

A few fun shapes. Bright colors. Slightly messy frosting.

That’s enough.

These are playful, easy, and such a fun addition to any Cinco de Mayo celebration.

And once you have a good sugar cookie recipe… you can make them for literally anything.

If you make this, let me know! I always love hearing from you.
