Back to School Rice Krispy Treats

This post was sponsored by JOANN. All opinions are my own.

Who is ready for school to start?!  If you’re in another state or country, you may have already started.  Here in the Pacific Northwest, we are soaking up the last few days of summer, about to begin a new school year.

I love sending my kids with treats for teachers on the first day of school.  I think it’s a fun way to break the ice when you meet a new teacher.  For several years we’ve made sugar cookies in apple shapes, chalkboards with the teachers name piped in buttercream and little crayons and pencil cookies.  They’ve always been a hit!

This year we’re making Rice Krispy Treats for the first day.  They are so easy to make, the kids could literally do them on their own!  You’ll just need a few supplies from JOANN and  a batch of Rice Krispy Treats.  You can make the job even easier by purchasing pre-made Rice Krispy Treats, already in rectangle shape!

You will need:

Rice Krispy Treats cut into rectangles (recipe HERE) or store bought Rice Krispy Treats

Rectangle Cookie Cutter

Black Candy Melts

White Candy Melts

Candy Melt EZ-Thin

Red, White, Brown and Green Icing

Wilton #4, #2 and #47 decorating tips

Wilton disposable decorating bags

Edible Food Markers

Optional: Wilton boxes, twine and tags

If you opt to make your own Rice Krispy Treats, allow them to cool and then cut them into rectangles using a rectangle-shaped cookie cutter or a sharp knife.

Melt black and white candy melts in separate microwave safe bowls at 30% power for 30 second increments.  Stop and stir.  Add Wilton EZ Thins if you have trouble with clumpy candy melts.  Microwave until fully melted.  Dip Rice Krispy Treat down into melted candy about 1/4 inch.  Dip half in white candy melts and half in black candy melts.  Allow to dry on parchment paper (about 20 minutes).

While waiting for your candy melts to harden, fill disposable decorating bags with chocolate or brown icing fitted with a #47 decorating tip, a bag of red icing fit with a #4 tip and a bag with white icing and a #2 tip.

Using the brown icing, draw a border around the Rice Krispy Treats dipped in black candy to create a chalkboard “frame”.   Using a blue edible marker, draw horizontal lines on the Rice Krispy Treats dipped in white chocolate to create notebook paper “lines”.

Using red edible food writing pen, draw edge down the notebook paper Rice Krispy Treats.

With the red and white icing, draw chalk and apples on the chalkboard Rice Krispy Treats.

Add 1 + 1 = 2 and ABC on the chalkboards.  If you know your teacher’s name, you can pipe it on using the white icing!

Add grades onto the notebook Rice Krispy Treats.  You can also write little notes or fun abbreviations like Ally & Stella = BFF’s to give to school friends.

When all treats are decorated, place them inside treat liners to give them that extra special touch.  Package them in small boxes tied in red and white twine and attach a hang tag with teacher’s name.
