How to Make the Burger Sauce:
Add the mayonnaise, ketchup and caramelized onions to a small bowl.

How to Make the In-N-Out Burger Bowls:
Cook sliced or diced onions in a skillet until they're soft, golden and caramelized.
Set aside two tablespoons for the burger sauce and save the rest for topping the bowls.
Add the ground beef to a skillet over medium heat.
Break the beef apart as it cooks and season with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Continue cooking until the beef is browned and cooked through.
Drain any excess grease if necessary.
While the beef cooks, chop the lettuce and tomatoes and get your pickles, cheese and caramelized onions ready.
If you're adding crispy potatoes or french fries, prepare those as well.
Assemble the Bowls:
Start each bowl with a generous layer of chopped lettuce.
Add the seasoned ground beef, fresh tomatoes, pickles, cheese and caramelized onions.
Add crispy potatoes or fries if you're using them, then finish everything with plenty of burger sauce.
Serve right away.
Make it your own: The topping amounts are intentionally flexible. Add as much lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickles and sauce as you like.
Make ahead: The ground beef, caramelized onions and burger sauce can all be prepared ahead of time. Store the components separately and assemble just before serving.
Farmers market tip: If tomatoes are in season, this is a great recipe for using fresh heirloom or locally grown tomatoes.
Potatoes: Crispy potatoes or french fries are optional, but highly recommended if you want the bowls to feel a little more like burger night.
