Cookie Camp Week 5: Community

Can’t believe it’s Week 5 at Cookie Camp!  This week our theme is Community.  

What is community?  Community is a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. It’s a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.

Being part of a community allows us to support one another, interact, share experiences and our modern life struggles. Having this open bond with others is what builds valuable relationships, and gives us a deeper sense of belonging. Communities are also filled with resources. Your strengths may be someone else’s weaknesses and vice versa.

We have the opportunity to be a part of several different communities from the actual community you live in to a neighborhood community.  Could be a church community, sports community, school community, even this cookie community!  It’s a group of people sharing something in common.  

This week at Cookie Camp our goal is for the kids to be a light in their community.  I encourage you to help brainstorm with your kids some ideas to take action in your community.  Organize a neighborhood clean up day, host a food bank drive, host a clothing/textile drive, host a used toy donation drive, host a plant a tree drive for neighborhood, make lunches for the homeless, make nursing home boxes to drop off, deliver homemade treats to community service members, etc.  The ideas are endless.  

Doing something for others can provide a healthy boost to self-confidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction. When you do good for others and the community, it provides a natural sense of accomplishment. In addition to the health benefits, volunteering creates a sense of purpose. The fulfilling feeling of giving back and contributing to society is exceptional.  Giving back is also a great way to get to know your community and its citizens. When you volunteer, you have the opportunity to meet new people.
