A Christmas Keepsake Idea You’ll Be Glad You Did

When my kids were super little, in fact Hudson was just a baby, I printed a stack of cards that said “I love you because…” and mailed them to everyone coming to Christmas dinner. Each person got enough cards to write something for every family member. They had all month to fill them out and either mail them back to me or bring them to Christmas. Simple.  We only did this one time, just one Christmas.  But now, all these years later, I’m really glad we did. It’s a Christmas keepsake that I’ll have forever.

Before Christmas, I collected all the cards, sorted them into little boxes, and handed them out at dinner. Each person received a bundle of handwritten notes from the people around the table. Some were sweet, some were funny, some were classic fill-it-out-the-night-before energy and no matter how they were filled out, they were all special.

I still have mine.

Christmas keepsake

One from my favorite aunt, who passed in 2020.
One from my grandma, handwriting I’d know anywhere.

It wasn’t meant to be a “tradition,” but it turned into something that stuck with me.

How You Can Recreate It

This is easy, low-effort, and a great way to get people thinking about each other instead of just the menu or the wrapping paper.

What you need:

  • Cards or printed templates
  • Pens
  • Envelopes or a small box (optional)

How it works:

  1. Print one card for each person.
  2. Give everyone enough cards to write one for every guest.
  3. Mail them or hand them out early in December.
  4. Have people return them before Christmas (or bring them).
  5. Sort them into bundles.
  6. Hand them out at dinner.

It’s personal without being a huge project. And you only have to do it once for it to matter.

If you want to try this with your family, I recreated the cards so you can download and print your own at home, no fancy supplies needed.

Ways to Make It Fun

  • Add treats or small gifts inside each person’s envelope
  • Let kids draw pictures instead of writing
  • Make it anonymous for a twist
  • Have everyone open theirs at the same time
  • Keep the notes in a box to look back on later

Why I’m Sharing This

It wasn’t an annual thing.
No Pinterest-level planning.
Just an idea that turned out better than expected, one I’m grateful we tried.

If you want to bring something meaningful (but still fun + low stress) to your holiday this year, this one is a good place to start.

What is a tradition you’re glad you started? Let me know!
