Holiday Hosting Checklist
There’s something so special about welcoming friends and family into your home during the holidays. All of the laughter, the cozy smells from the kitchen, the table that feels like it’s been waiting all year to be set. But let’s be honest: hosting can also feel a little (okay, a lot) overwhelming.
Whether you’re planning Thanksgiving dinner or a festive Christmas brunch, having a checklist makes all the difference. This is my go-to holiday hosting checklist! The one I use every year to stay organized, keep stress low, and make sure the day feels intentional and enjoyable. You can even print it out and check things off as you go!

1. Plan Your Guest List and Menu
Start here before anything else, it will guide every other part of your prep.
- Confirm how many guests are coming (and if anyone has dietary needs).
- Decide whether you’re cooking everything or doing a potluck-style meal.
- Plan your menu. Include appetizers, drinks, main dishes, sides, and desserts.
- Make your grocery list early to avoid last-minute store runs.
Plan a few dishes that can be made ahead, like casseroles, desserts, or cold appetizers. It’ll save you sanity the day of!
2. Prep and Clean Your Space
Before you decorate, start with a clean foundation.
- Declutter surfaces like countertops, dining tables, and entryways.
- Give your bathroom a refresh (new hand towel, candle, and extra toilet paper!).
- Do a quick kitchen deep clean, especially the fridge and oven. (this is my current favorite cleaner!)
- Make space in your fridge/freezer for incoming groceries and leftovers.
Keep a “stash basket” handy for quick tidying before guests arrive.
3. Set the Table and Decorate
You don’t need to go over the top! Focus on cozy and welcoming.
- Choose a color palette or theme (neutral, winter white, rustic, or classic red + green).
- Use a pretty table runner or tablecloth.
- Layer in texture. Use things like linen napkins, greenery, or wood chargers.
- Add candles or twinkle lights for a warm glow.
- Set out serving dishes before guests arrive so you’re not scrambling mid-meal.

4. Prep Drinks and Appetizers
Guests usually arrive hungry and ready to mingle, so have this part ready first.
- Create a small beverage station (coffee, hot cocoa, cider, wine, or sparkling water).
- Chill your drinks ahead of time.
- Prep charcuterie or small bites that guests can enjoy while you finish cooking.
- Don’t forget ice and extra napkins!

- Top each glass off with Prosecco.
- Garnish with Rosemary and a few sugared cranberries.

5. Cook and Warm Food Strategically
Timing is everything.
- Start with the dishes that take the longest.
- Keep sides warm in the oven or slow cooker.
- Label serving dishes so you know what goes where.
- Ask a friend or family member to be your “kitchen helper” for plating and serving.

6. Add Finishing Touches Before Guests Arrive
This is where the magic happens…the calm before the doorbell rings.
- Light a candle or turn on your diffuser.
- Turn on background music or a holiday playlist.
- Do a quick walk-through for last-minute clutter.
- Snap a few photos of your setup (you’ll love looking back at them later!).

7. Enjoy the Day
You’ve done all the prep, now actually enjoy it!
- Don’t stress if something goes off plan, guests rarely notice.
- Keep snacks or a cheese board available for grazers.
- Accept help when it’s offered.
- Pour yourself a drink, take a deep breath, and soak in the moment.
Hosting during the holidays doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. It’s about creating moments that feel cozy, thoughtful, and welcoming. A little preparation goes a long way, and having a checklist on hand makes it so much easier to actually enjoy your own gathering.
Whether you’re setting the table for a big family feast or having a few close friends over for drinks and dessert, the heart of the holidays is connection. So light a candle, turn on some music, and let the little imperfections slide.
Are you hosting this year? I’d love to hear about it!
