This week I lost one of my favorite people in the This week I lost one of my favorite people in the entire world, my Grandpa.

I know how lucky I am to have had him this long, but I don’t think there’s an age where you’re ready to lose someone you love so much.

My grandpa was so much more than a grandpa to me. He was a father figure from the day I was born. I loved him so much I named my daughter, Ally James, after him.

When I was little, my grandma, grandpa and I were inseparable. We called ourselves the Three Musketeers. They’d come get me every chance they could for weekends, trips and vacations, and being with them was my favorite place to be.

They made me feel like I could do anything. In their eyes I was the smartest, most talented kid in the world, and because they believed it, I did too. So much of who I am started with the way they believed in me.

My grandpa would sneak me cash when my grandma wasn’t looking, take me for Saturday morning donuts, and laugh so hard at his own jokes he’d cry. He was ridiculously handsome, somewhere between Regis Philbin and Sean Connery, and the smell of Brut will always be him.

He taught me how to golf, drive a stick shift and always stay to the right in a crowd (think about it..it makes sense). But most of all, he showed me what a life changed by Jesus looks like.

My grandpa loved Jesus with his whole heart.

He had a difficult childhood and a past he wasn’t proud of. I never knew that version of him. Jesus had completely changed his life, and he spent the rest of it making sure everyone he met knew who had changed it. He never missed an opportunity to share his testimony or tell someone how much Jesus loved them.

He also spent a lot of time telling me he was probably dying. He was a bit of a silly hypochondriac and joked that his headstone should say, “I told you I was sick.” But he was never afraid to die. He knew exactly where he was going.

Thursday, God called him home.

My heart is broken, but there is so much peace in knowing the place he spent his life telling everyone about is finally the place he gets to be.

How lucky am I to have been his granddaughter. ❤️
