5 Apple Desserts You’ll Want to Try This Fall

The first hint of fall is here, and that immediately makes me want to start baking with apples.

Maybe it’s the cinnamon, the caramel, or just the excuse to turn on the oven again after a long summer, but apple desserts are always some of my favorites this time of year.

If you came home from the apple orchard with more apples than you know what to do with, or you’re simply ready for some cozy fall baking, I rounded up five of my favorite apple dessert recipes to make this fall.

There’s a classic warm apple crisp, caramel apple pie, apple cinnamon bread, the cutest little apple berry pie cookies, and even a cranberry apple chicken salad that can easily be made into an appetizer.

Make one for a cozy weekend at home or save all five for your fall baking list!

Why We Love Apple Desserts for Fall

Pumpkin gets a lot of attention this time of year, but I will always make room for apple desserts.

Apples pair so well with all of those cozy fall flavors we love. The cinnamon, brown sugar, caramel, vanilla, and warm baking spices. They’re also incredibly versatile.

You can bake them into breads and pies, tuck them inside cookies, turn them into a warm crisp, or even use them to make a festive fall drink.

Here are five recipes to start with.

1. Classic Apple Crisp

Sometimes the simplest desserts are the ones I love most.

A warm apple crisp filled with tender cinnamon-spiced apples and topped with a buttery, golden crumble is hard to beat. It’s everything I want in a fall dessert without the work of making a pie crust.

And you absolutely have to serve it warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

The combination of warm apples, crispy topping, and melting ice cream is SO good.

Perfect for: Sunday dinner, apple picking season, Thanksgiving, casual fall gatherings, and cozy nights at home.

2. Caramel Apple Pie

If classic apple pie wasn’t already good enough, add caramel.

This Caramel Apple Pie combines tender apples and warm fall spices with rich caramel for the ultimate fall dessert. It’s beautiful enough to serve for Thanksgiving but just as good for a weekend of fall baking.

Serve each slice slightly warm with vanilla ice cream and an extra drizzle of homemade caramel sauce on top.

You really can’t go wrong.

Perfect for: Thanksgiving, Friendsgiving, fall dinner parties, Sunday dinner, and holiday dessert tables.

3. Apple Cinnamon Bread

This is the recipe to make when you want your entire house to smell like fall.

Apple Cinnamon Bread is soft, cozy, and filled with apple and cinnamon flavor. It’s technically more of a sweet bread than a dessert, which means I’m completely comfortable eating a slice for breakfast, an afternoon snack, and dessert.

It’s also a great recipe to make ahead or bring to a friend.

Wrap a loaf in parchment paper, tie it with twine, and you have the easiest homemade fall gift.

Perfect for: Fall breakfasts, brunch, afternoon snacks, teacher gifts, neighbor gifts, and weekend baking.

4. Apple Berry Pie Cookies

These might be the cutest recipe on the list.

Apple Berry Pie Cookies take everything you love about pie and turn it into an individual handheld dessert. They’re filled with apple and berry flavors and have that cozy homemade pie feeling without needing to serve everyone a slice.

I especially love these for fall parties and dessert tables because they’re easy for guests to grab and look so cute arranged on a cake stand.

Perfect for: Fall parties, showers, dessert tables, Thanksgiving, Friendsgiving, and bake sales.

5. Cranberry Chicken Salad Apple Bites

If you have a few apples left after all that fall baking, save one for these Cranberry Chicken Salad Apple Bites.

Crisp apple slices are topped with creamy chicken salad filled with sweet dried cranberries for the perfect combination of sweet, savory, creamy, and crunchy. They’re such an easy fall appetizer and a fun way to use apples when you want something other than dessert.

I love these for fall gatherings because they feel a little special without requiring much work. Arrange them on a platter for a girls’ night, Thanksgiving appetizer, baby shower, or afternoon get-together. They also make a great light lunch or snack.

Perfect for: Fall parties, Thanksgiving appetizers, girls’ nights, showers, lunch, and easy entertaining.

Which Apple Dessert Should You Make?

Can’t decide? Here’s where I’d start.

For an easy fall dessert: Apple Crisp

For Thanksgiving: Caramel Apple Pie

For breakfast or gifting: Apple Cinnamon Bread

For a party: Apple Berry Pie Cookies

For happy hour: Cranberry Chicken Salad Apple Bites

Or make your way through the entire list before fall is over. That’s probably what I’d do.

Make It an Apple-Themed Fall Night

Here’s a fun idea if you’ve recently been apple picking: turn all those apples into an excuse to have people over.

Keep dinner simple, make the Caramel Apple Pie or Apple Crisp, make an appetizer, light a few candles, and let dessert be the main event.

You could even create a little caramel apple station with sliced apples, homemade caramel, chocolate, nuts, sprinkles, and other toppings if kids are coming.

It doesn’t have to be a full-blown party. Sometimes inviting a few people over for dessert is more fun anyway.

Tips for Baking with Apples

A few things make a big difference when you’re making homemade apple desserts:

  • Choose firm apples that hold their shape while baking.
  • Using more than one variety can give your dessert a more interesting balance of sweet and tart flavors.
  • Cut apples into similar-sized pieces so they cook evenly.
  • Don’t be afraid of cinnamon and warm spices…they’re what make apple desserts taste like fall!
  • Add a pinch of salt to caramel and sweet fillings to balance the sweetness.
  • When a recipe calls for cooling before slicing, actually let it cool. I know it’s hard!

What Apples Are Best for Baking?

For most apple desserts, look for firm apples that won’t completely break down in the oven.

Granny Smith apples are a classic choice when you want tartness, while Honeycrisp apples bring more natural sweetness. Using a combination can give pies, crisps, and other baked apple desserts a nice balance of flavor.

Your individual recipe may call for a specific variety, so always check that first.

Make Your Fall Baking Easier

A few kitchen staples make apple season much easier:

FAQ

Apple pie, apple crisp, apple bread, apple cookies, apple cake, and caramel apple desserts are all classic choices for fall. If you want something easy, start with apple crisp or apple cinnamon bread.

If you’ve brought home a big haul from the apple orchard, make several recipes at once. Apple crisp and pie are perfect for dessert, while apple cinnamon bread is great for breakfast or gifting.

Many apple desserts can be prepared ahead, although storage varies by recipe. Check the individual recipe instructions for the best make-ahead and storage recommendations.

Cinnamon, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, maple, pecans, walnuts, cranberry, and warm baking spices all pair beautifully with apples.

Vanilla ice cream is always my first choice for warm apple pie or crisp. Whipped cream, caramel sauce, chopped nuts, or a dusting of powdered sugar are also delicious depending on the recipe.

Apple season always seems to go by faster than I expect, so consider this your reminder to make something with them while you can.

Start with an easy apple crisp on a cozy Sunday, bake a loaf of apple cinnamon bread to share with a friend, or save the caramel apple pie for Thanksgiving. And if you’re having friends over, the apple bites and those little pie cookies are such a fun addition.

You don’t need a special occasion, either. A cool fall afternoon and a bag of apples on the counter are reason enough.
