Summer Pool Party Decorated Sugar Cookies

Summer sugar cookies always feel extra fun.

Maybe it’s the bright colors. Maybe it’s the playful themes. Or maybe it’s because summer parties are usually a little less serious and a lot more colorful.

Either way, these summer sugar cookies ended up being one of my favorite sets I’ve made in a long time.

This collection was inspired by all the little things that make summer feel nostalgic:
pool floats, citrus slices, iced drinks, backyard BBQs, retro swimsuits, sunshine, and long afternoons spent outside.

And while these designs may look detailed, they all start with my go-to soft sugar cookie recipe with buttercream frosting.

Citrus Sugar Cookies

The citrus cookies might be my favorite part of this set.

There’s something about bright oranges, lemons, and limes that instantly feels like summer.

I kept the designs pretty simple:

  • lemon and lime wedges
  • orange slices
  • grapefruit-inspired cookies
  • layered citrus colors

The key is using bright frosting colors and keeping the shapes clean.

These are perfect for:

  • summer parties
  • pool parties
  • citrus-themed baby showers
  • backyard BBQ dessert tables
  • summer birthdays

And, citrus cookies mixed onto a cake stand with fresh fruit nearby is such an easy dessert table setup.

Here is the cookie cutter I used.

Pool Party Sugar Cookies

Summer pool party cookies are one of those themes where you can really have fun.

This set included:

I leaned into pinks, oranges, yellows, aqua blues, and coral tones to make everything feel cohesive without being overly themed.

The cookies almost looked like little pieces of vacation.

Iced Drink Sugar Cookies

The iced drink cookies are probably the most fun to decorate.

The tiny lemons… come on. So cute!

They’re playful and easy to customize depending on your party colors.

These would be so cute for:

  • girls’ summer parties
  • bachelorette weekends
  • Palm Springs-themed parties
  • poolside birthdays

And if you’re making a full dessert table, these pair perfectly with actual iced drinks and citrus garnishes.

BBQ Cookies

I also added a few backyard BBQ-inspired cookies into the set.

These helped balance out all the bright pool party colors and made the collection feel more nostalgic and Americana-inspired.

These are so cute for summer cookouts and family gatherings.

My Favorite Summer Color Palette

One thing that really helps themed cookie sets feel cohesive is sticking to a color palette.

For this set I used:

Bright, colorful, and a little retro.

Very summer.

Buttercream vs. Royal Icing for Summer Cookies

I always decorate my sugar cookies using buttercream frosting instead of royal icing.

I know royal icing is traditional, but personally I think buttercream tastes so much better and feels less intimidating for beginners.

It’s softer, easier to work with, and gives cookies a more homemade feel.

Especially for playful summer cookie sets like this.

Tips for Decorating Summer Sugar Cookies

Keep Shapes Simple

Simple shapes with fun colors usually look better than overly complicated designs.

Use Bright Colors

Summer cookies should feel cheerful.

Don’t be afraid of color.

Mix Statement Cookies with Simple Fillers

Not every cookie needs tons of detail.

A few simple citrus wedges mixed with more detailed cookies keeps the set balanced.

Use a Consistent Palette

This helps the whole set feel intentional and polished.

Bright citrus tones mixed with soft retro colors always work beautifully together.

I think summer cookies are supposed to feel playful.

Bright colors, fun themes, slightly messy frosting… that’s part of what makes them charming.

These cookies ended up feeling like tiny little snapshots of summer:
