Valentines Day Cookie Decorating

Decorating Valentine’s Day sugar cookies doesn’t have to feel intimidating or overly precise. With a simple method, a few basic tools, and a little patience, you can create cookies that feel festive, homemade, and genuinely fun to make.

This is the decorating approach I always come back to time and time again. It’s one that’s flexible, forgiving, and easy to adapt whether you’re decorating solo, with kids, or for a Galentine’s party. Think less perfection, more personality.

Below I’ll walk you through my Valentines Day cookie decorating method step by step, from frosting to finishing touches, with plenty of room to make it your own.

1. My Sugar Cookie Decorating Method

When it comes to decorated sugar cookies, I like to keep the baking and frosting simple so the decorating feels enjoyable, not stressful.

For the cookies themselves, I use a my sugar cookie recipe that holds its shape well and bakes up soft but sturdy. You want a cookie that won’t spread too much and can handle a layer of frosting without breaking.

Best Sugar Cookies Ever – Jenny Cookies Sugar Cookie Recipe

The sugar cookie that started it all!
This recipe will always be dearest to me.  Every time I tell students in my cookie workshops that these sugar cookies are fail-proof, they eye me suspiciously.  But once they try it, they agree: Anyone can make them and everyone will love them.

Ingredients

  • 3 CUPS ALL-PURPOSE FLOUR PLUS MORE FOR ROLLING
  • 2 TSP ALUMINUM-FREE BAKING POWDER
  • 1 CUP 2 STICKS SALTED BUTTER, AT ROOM TEMPERATURE
  • 1 CUP SUGAR
  • 1 LARGE EGG
  • 2 TSP PURE VANILLA EXTRACT

Instructions

  • Into a medium bowl, whisk together flour and baking powder. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, using an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment on medium speed, beat butter and sugar for about 1½ minutes, or until smooth. Beat in the egg and vanilla until well combined. Scrape the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula.
  • Turn the mixer speed to low and carefully add the flour mixture a little at a time, occasionally stopping to scrape the sides of the bowl. Once all the flour has been incorporated, the dough should form a ball around the mixing attachment and feel soft but not sticky.
  • Wrap the dough ball in a piece of plastic wrap and press down to form a 1-inch-thick disk. Refrigerate for at least 10 minutes before rolling or store for up to 7 days tightly wrapped.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  • Roll out the dough on a lightly floured flat work surface to about ¼-inch thickness, using additional flour as necessary to prevent sticking. Use cookie cutters to create desired shapes, and carefully transfer with a cookie spatula to a nonstick baking sheet, placing the cookies about ¾ inch apart.
  • Bake one sheet at a time in the middle of the oven until puffy, about 7-8 minutes. Allow the cookies to rest for 2 minutes on the baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

  • Repeat with the gathered scraps and remaining disk until all the dough has been used.

For frosting, I prefer buttercream for this style of Valentines day cookie decorating. It’s approachable, easy to work with, and doesn’t require drying time like royal icing. Buttercream also gives cookies a softer, more homemade feel which is perfect for Valentine’s Day.

This method is all about flexibility. You don’t need to be exact, and you don’t need professional experience to get beautiful results.

Instructions

  • Combine the margerine and Crisco in the bowl of an electric mixer; using a paddle attachment, beat on medium speed until smooth, about 2 minutes.

Why Buttercream?

If you’re used to seeing royal-icing-style cookies, you’re in for a treat. Here’s why buttercream works beautifully for sugar cookie decorating:

  • It’s quicker! There’s no waiting hours for icing to dry.
  • It’s softer, richer, and tastes like actual frosting (because it is!).
  • Kids can use it more easily, less precision needed.
  • It gives cookies that charming, textured, bakery-style look.

Buttercream is perfect for any shape of cookie you want to make!

Prepping the Piping Bags

Before decorating, a little prep goes a long way.

Once your buttercream is mixed and colored, transfer it into piping bags fitted with your chosen tips. I like to start with just one or two colors for Valentine’s Day, like soft pinks, dusty rose, or whites. Then add accent colors if I feel inspired.

If you’re decorating with kids or want to keep things simple, you can absolutely prep fewer bags and reuse colors. These are my personal favorite piping bags! Twist the top of each piping bag closed and keep them covered when not in use to prevent the frosting from drying out.

Having everything ready before you start decorating makes the whole process feel calmer and more enjoyable.

Creating the Base Layer

The base layer sets the tone for your cookies, but it doesn’t need to be perfect.

For this step, you can either:

  • Pipe frosting using a #4 round tip, or
  • Spread frosting with a small offset spatula or knife

Both work beautifully. Piping gives a slightly more defined look, while spreading creates a softer, rustic finish.

Focus on covering the cookie evenly rather than making it flawless. Small imperfections add charm and give the cookies that cozy, homemade feel that Valentine’s Day is all about.

Adding Detail with Different Piping Tips

Once the base layer is on, this is where decorating really becomes fun.

Using a few different piping tips can completely change the look of your cookies. Star tips, small round tips, and petal-style tips are great options for Valentine’s designs.

You can add:

  • Simple borders
  • Small hearts
  • Rosettes
  • Dots or textured lines

This step doesn’t need to be complicated. Even repeating one simple design across all your cookies creates a cohesive, intentional look.

Valentine’s Day cookie Decorating Inspiration

When decorating Valentine’s Day sugar cookies, I like to keep designs playful and sweet rather than overly detailed.

Some simple ideas:

  • Heart shapes with softly piped borders
  • Swirls of pink or white buttercream
  • Minimal designs with a few intentional details
  • Mix-and-match patterns using the same color palette

Decorating cookies should feel creative and relaxed, not like you’re trying to copy something perfectly.

Packaging for Valentines Day cookies

Once the cookies are decorated, packaging is what makes them feel extra special.

Clear bags, bakery-style boxes, parchment paper, and simple ribbon go a long way. You don’t need elaborate packaging, just something that protects the cookies and makes them feel giftable.

These cookies are perfect for teachers, neighbors, friends, or as a small Valentine’s surprise. Thoughtful packaging turns a simple cookie into a meaningful gesture.
