How to Throw a Hippie Party

Eat Cookies, Be Hippie!  I didn’t grow up in the 60’s but appreciate the history and style of the hippie culture.  I thought it would be such a fun theme at Jenny Cookies Bake Shop this month, but also inspiration for a creative theme party!

To host a Hippie party, first you’ll need to invite your guests.  I’d recommend encouraging guests to come dressed in the clothing and style of the era.  It sets the tone and makes the party even more fun!  I found this flowy, vintage-inspired dress here!

 

Location: When I think of hippies, I think flower fields and tall grass.  Is there a local flower farm you could host your event, or an outdoor field or park for rent?  I was so fortunate to shoot at The Farmhouse Flower Farm.

Set the scene: My friends at The Backyard Brunch Company had the most perfect boho table, rug and cushions to get the party started.  I began layering the table with an old lace tablecloth I found at a second hand store, and cut it to make a runner.  Next, I added vintage cake plates, trays, compotes, and glass candleholders down the center.  Then came the place settings for each guest, bud vases of fresh flowers from the farm, and lastly, lots of dessert! 

Let’s talk dessert:  I’m a big fan of eating dessert first, especially at parties!  In my experience, if it’s not a big family affair or a longer length party, just serving dessert and drinks is plenty.  I love a cookie party!  For our groovy set up, I filled the table with cupcakes, cookies, cakes and crispy cubes.  

 

 

Party Activities: For a boho/hippie party, there are so many fun crafts and activities that go with the theme.  Grab beads and let guests make bracelets and necklaces.  Gather flowers and supplies to create a flower crown.  Tie dye a t-shirt.  Play name-that-tune with music from the 60’s and early 70’s. 

Speaking of music: You definitely want to have a great playlist prepared for your party.  If you don’t have the time to compile one, I have a great one I made called “Good Times” you can find here! 

Snap a photo!  I like to offer guests a spot to capture a party photo or selfie to remember the moment.  The background of our hippie party couldn’t be any groovier than this old Volkswagen Bus. It created the perfect backdrop for our party table and also offered a 360 degree photo backdrop! 

Take home favors: Party gifts are often my favorite detail of the party!  They can be as simple as a packaged edible favor (a brownie could be fun for this theme 😉 or as over the top as a custom tshirt for the party.  This Eat Cookies Be Hippie tee is perfect for guests to wear the next day!  Think of it like a concert tee!  (Can you spot our “brownies” in the photo below?)
