Chocolate Sugar Cookies with Chocolate Buttercream

I love a Valentine’s dessert that looks fancy but is actually very doable at home and these chocolate sugar cookies decorated to look like a box of chocolates are exactly that.

These soft chocolate sugar cookies are swirled with chocolate buttercream, styled and boxed to look like a classic Valentine’s chocolate assortment. They’re cute, nostalgic, and way more fun than grabbing a last-minute box at the store.

So if you’re gifting these for Valentine’s Day, making them for a Galentine’s night, or putting together a homemade treat box, this idea is simple, flexible, and easy to customize.

Why a Cookie “Box of Chocolates” Is Such a Fun Valentine’s Idea

Valentine’s Day desserts don’t have to be complicated to feel special.

What I love about this idea is:

  • It feels thoughtful and handmade
  • You can customize the flavors and designs
  • It works for gifting, parties, or dessert tables
  • It looks impressive without requiring advanced decorating skills

Plus, cookies travel better than cupcakes, don’t melt like chocolate, and are easier to make ahead.

The Base: Chocolate Sugar Cookies

These cookies start with a chocolate sugar cookie base. It’s soft, slightly chewy and sturdy enough to hold buttercream without spreading or breaking.

They’re rolled, cut into simple shapes (squares, rectangles, circles), and baked just until set. You want them soft, not crunchy! Think more bakery-style than crisp cookie.

Everything I used!

Chocolate Buttercream (Simple & Rich)

The frosting is a classic chocolate buttercream.

Nothing overly fancy here. The goal isn’t perfect piping… it’s texture and variety. Swirls, swoops, and dots. All of the piping techniques work and actually make the cookies look more like a real chocolate assortment.

  • 2-3 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt optional

  • Add vanilla and salt (if using) and beat on medium speed for 1 minute until fluffy.

Decorating the Cookies to Look Like Chocolates

This is where the fun really happens and where perfection is not required.

Think about how a box of chocolates looks:

  • Different shapes
  • Different textures
  • Some smooth, some swirled
  • Some simple, some detailed

You can recreate that look by:

  • Using different piping tips for variety
  • Swirling frosting with a spoon or offset spatula
  • Adding simple details like sprinkles, sanding sugar, or drizzle
  • Keeping the color palette mostly chocolate with subtle accents

The goal is variation, not uniformity. Slightly imperfect cookies actually sell the “chocolate box” look even more.

Turning Them into a DIY Valentine’s Gift

Once the cookies are decorated and set, it’s time to package them, and this is where they really shine as a gift.

You can:

  • Arrange them in a shallow treat box like a chocolate assortment
  • Use parchment or mini liners to separate each cookie
  • Add a simple ribbon or gift tag
  • Include a handwritten note or Valentine

This makes such a sweet:

  • Valentine’s Day gift
  • Galentine’s gift idea
  • Teacher or neighbor gift
  • Dessert table centerpiece

Make-Ahead & Storage Tips

These cookies are great for prepping ahead, which is huge during Valentine’s season.

  • Cookies can be baked 1–2 days in advance
  • Frost the day before gifting for best texture
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature
  • Avoid stacking frosted cookies unless separated with parchment

They hold up really well and still look beautiful when packaged.

Why This Is One of My Favorite Valentine’s Desserts

I love desserts that feel thoughtful, homemade and a little nostalgic.

This “box of chocolates” cookie idea checks all those boxes. It’s creative without being overwhelming, festive without being over-the-top, and honestly just fun to make.

If you’re looking for a Valentine’s dessert that doubles as a gift, this one is such a good option.
