December Self-Care Essentials

December has a way of pulling us in two different directions. One part of us wants the cozy magic like the slow mornings, the twinkling lights and the warm blankets. And the other part of us is juggling a never-ending list of obligations, school events, holiday parties, winter colds, last-minute shopping, and the pressure to “make the season memorable.”

This is exactly why I love building small, comforting rituals into December…not big, dramatic wellness plans, but tiny shifts that make the month feel softer around the edges. These are my December self-care essentials! The things I reach for when I want to feel grounded, warm, restored, and like I’m actually present in my own life.

These also make amazing homebody gift ideas if you’re shopping for someone who craves slow, comforting routines.

Starting Slow: Morning Rituals That Feel Like a Deep Breath

December mornings are dark and chilly here is Seattle, which makes it the perfect season to create a gentle start to your day. One of my favorite winter self care rituals is starting my day with some nutrition. I either make my favorite greens (use code ‘cookies’) or make a fresh juice first thing in the morning. There’s something about running citrus, apples, or ginger through my juicer that wakes me up in a way coffee can’t. It feels like giving my body a gift.

Cozy Comforts That Make Evenings Feel Calmer

Evening self care is where I shine. December is the month of blankets, warm drinks, soups simmering on the stove, and curling up in soft fabrics. A few favorites:

Weighted Comfort items

weighted sleep mask or Nodpod weighted body pod is such a grounding little luxury. It’s like giving yourself a hug. I reach for mine when the holiday to-do list feels like too much or when I need help falling asleep.

Soft & warm layers

There’s cozy…and then there’s the full December homebody experience: slipping into a Barefoot Dreams robe, pulling out your favorite pjs, and padding around the house in fresh slippers. You just instantly feel calmer. Add a Barefoot Dreams blanket and you’re basically wrapped in a cloud.

The Sound of Peace

I love using my Hatch sound machine all year long, but in winter it creates a cozy environment that helps me rest and sleep deeper. It’s also one of my top homebody favorites for gifting because it’s something people use daily but rarely buy for themselves.

Making Your Home Feel Like a Retreat

Winter self care often starts with your environment. If your home feels warm, replenishing, and beautiful, you naturally unwind. Little swaps go a long way.

A fresh sheet set on the bed and a new candle feels almost therapeutic during the holiday rush. It’s the quickest way to reset your space and make climbing into bed feel like something to look forward to.

In the kitchen, December is all about warm comfort food. A sturdy dutch oven is my go-to for soups, stews, and slow dinners that make the whole house smell cozy. Pair that with pretty wine glasses, and suddenly a regular Tuesday night feels like something meaningful.

None of this has to be perfect. It’s less about “doing self care right” and more about creating simple rituals that support you through the fullest month of the year.

Beauty Self-Care

December is the perfect month to lean into little beauty rituals that make you feel refreshed, hydrated, and put back together. Winter can be rough on our skin, our sleep, and our energy, so building a few simple beauty self-care habits into your week can make such a difference.

One of my favorite winter self care treats is using Peter Thomas Roth eye patches in the morning. They feel icy-cold and instantly de-puffing, like a mini spa moment before the day really starts. If you wake up early, have a big hosting week ahead, or just want to look a little more awake, they’re magic.

I also keep TheraPlush hand cream nearby all season long. December air can be dry and harsh, so having a deeply hydrating hand cream tucked into your bedside table, purse, or kitchen drawer becomes its own form of self care.

And then there’s my favorite cozy-night beauty ritual: a red light mask. It’s the ultimate homebody beauty tool! I use mine while watching a show, scrolling, or just taking a quiet moment to unwind. It fits perfectly into the whole cozy gift ideas vibe and makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves skincare but also loves staying home.

everything listed in one place:

A Season to Care for Yourself, Too

December moves fast. But the moments that actually matter, like the slow meals and warm blankets are easy to miss unless you make space for them.

These self care essentials aren’t about being fancy or curated. They’re about building a life that feels good from the inside out. If you’re a homebody at heart (or shopping for one), these are the things that turn winter into a season of rest instead of overwhelm.

Give yourself permission to slow down. To breathe deeper. To cozy up. To take care of the version of you who’s doing a lot for everyone else.
