Taylor Swift’s Chai Cookie Recipe (Perfect for Her 12th Album Release)

Since Taylor’s Dropping Her 12th Album… I Baked Her Cookies

If you’ve been following me for any amount of time, you know I love Taylor Swift. So with her 12th album coming out this week, I figured it was the perfect week to bake her famous chai cookies.

Taylor shared this recipe years ago and it’s been floating around the internet ever since. They’re soft, cozy, and taste like fall in every bite. I added a simple vanilla glaze (powdered sugar and milk) and they turned out sooo good.

This is Taylor Swift’s chai cookie recipe!

Cookies:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ cup granulated sugar (plus extra for sprinkling)
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 chai tea bag (cut open, use the crushed leaves)

Glaze:

  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar (sifted)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk

Instructions

Make the dough:

  • Beat butter until creamy. Mix in oil, then granulated and powdered sugars.
  • Add egg and vanilla; mix until smooth.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, salt, and chai tea leaves.
  • Stir dry ingredients into wet just until combined (dough will be soft).
  • Chill
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (overnight is best).

Bake

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment.
  • Scoop dough into 1-tablespoon balls, place 2 inches apart, and gently flatten.
  • Sprinkle tops with sugar.
  • Bake 9–10 minutes, until edges are golden and centers are soft.
  • Cool 5 minutes on the pan, then transfer to a wire rack.

Make the glaze

  • Whisk powdered sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and 2 tablespoons milk (add more if needed to thin).
  • Glaze cookies
  • Spoon glaze over cooled cookies, spreading slightly but leaving edges bare.

Notes

Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days (layer parchment if stacking).
Freeze dough up to 3 months; thaw in fridge before baking.
Homemade chai spice option: ¾ tsp ginger, ½ tsp cinnamon, ¼ tsp cardamom, ¼ tsp nutmeg, ¼ tsp allspice, pinch of cloves.

Why I Love These Cookies:

  • Easy to make – simple pantry ingredients, nothing fancy.
  • Cozy chai flavor – warm spices that taste like fall.
  • A Swiftie classic – straight from Taylor’s own kitchen, which makes them extra fun to bake.

Tips for Success:

  • Chill the dough – at least 1 hour, overnight is even better for a stronger chai flavor.
  • Add sparkle – sprinkle sugar on top before baking for a little crunch and shine.
  • Glaze last – let cookies cool completely before adding the vanilla glaze so it sets perfectly.

Storing & Sharing:

Store cookies in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Layer with parchment paper if you’re stacking them so the glaze doesn’t smear.

You can also freeze the dough for up to 3 months, just thaw in the refrigerator before baking.
